Clifford was born in Dawley but had moved before the war to live at 28 Hyndburn Street, Accrington with his father Arthur. He had originally enlisted into the Royal Lancashire regiment (Private, 21525) but at some point had been transferred into the Cheshire Regiment.

It was whilst serving with the Cheshire’s that Clifford was killed in action on the 28th March 1918, his body not being recovered his name appears on the Pozieres Memorial on panels 35 - 36.

Extra info: Clifford was christened George Henry Clifford Slaney Stead at Madeley on 18 May 1897, his mother was Elizabeth maiden name Jones, in 1901 the family was living at Southall, Dawley, later that year in September his mother Elizabeth died, Clifford would have only been 4.

Clifford’s father was Arthur Price Stead, on the 20th April 1902 he married Mercy maiden name Hyde, the family in 1911 were living at 9 Southall Road, Dawley, at some point after 1911 the family moved to Accrington, Lancashire, George used the name Clifford as his first name to enlist and all his army record’s have him as Clifford Stead.

Clifford must have had a close relationship with his step mother as he listed her as next of kin and his pension was paid to her.
